What Caterham roofs are actually like
Caterham is really two settlements. The original village sits up on the ridge, Caterham-on-the-Hill, while Caterham Valley below is, in the county archive’s words, a product of the Victorian age: it grew from the railway’s arrival in 1856 (the station is still a terminus today), with new churches following in 1866 and 1882 to serve the boom. Interwar growth filled the gaps: the 1939 Caterham Bypass was one of the first in the country.
That history is legible in the roofs: Victorian stock in the Valley with its era’s slate, tall stacks and ornate details, and 20th-century family housing spreading over the Hill. On the Hill you’ve also got the Caterham Barracks conservation area: the former Guards depot, built from 1877 and redeveloped for housing after 1995, where sensitive, matching materials are part of any honest quote.
And everything here happens on a slope. The parish runs from about 110 metres on the valley floor to 233 metres on the downs, and the connecting streets are genuinely steep: scaffold, deliveries and skips all have to be planned for gradient, which is exactly the sort of thing a local quote prices correctly the first time.

Caterham questions
Do you cover both the Hill and the Valley?
Both, plus everything on the slopes in between: the gradient changes the access plan, not the answer. Whyteleafe and Chaldon share the CR3 district and are equally inside the patch.
We’re in the Barracks conservation area. Does that change a roof job?
It can: conservation areas expect repairs and re-roofs to respect the original materials, and Chaldon has its own conservation area too. We flag exactly what applies in the written quote rather than letting it surface as a problem later.
Steep street, nowhere to put scaffold. Can you still work?
Yes, steep and awkward is normal for Caterham. Scaffold on a gradient, permits where the highway’s involved, deliveries timed for the hill: it all goes in the plan and the price before work starts, not into “extras” after.
