What Purley roofs are actually like
Purley grew fast in the 1920s and 30s as a well-off railway suburb spread over what the council’s own plan calls “wooded hillsides and the valley”, which is why so many of its houses are large, detached or generously semi-detached, and sitting on sloped plots where access is part of the job.
The showpiece is the Webb Estate and neighbouring Upper Woodcote Village, William Webb’s “garden first” estate, now two conservation areas. The council’s appraisal describes the houses’ “large steeply pitched roofs with prominent chimneys”, and its rules are unusually specific for roofers: clay tiles are the typical covering, re-roofing should match the original in colour, dimensions and texture, and artificial roof coverings shouldn’t be used. A quote for those streets has to start from those rules, not discover them later.

Can you re-roof a house on the Webb Estate?
Yes, with the conservation-area rules built into the quote: clay tile matched to the original in colour, dimensions and texture, and no artificial substitutes. It costs more than a concrete-tile roof and there’s no honest way round that; what you get is a roof that keeps both the street and the planners happy.
Do you cover Kenley too?
Yes, all of CR8, Kenley included. Kenley Aerodrome has its own conservation area, so the same matching-materials thinking applies around it.
Our chimney is huge and losing mortar. Repair or take it down?
Purley’s big interwar stacks are usually worth keeping, repointing and re-flaunching caught in time is far cheaper than a rebuild. If a stack really is past saving we’ll show you the evidence and give you both prices in writing.
