Roofs in Thornton Heath

What Thornton Heath roofs are actually like

Thornton Heath transformed from farmland to suburb in one Victorian rush: the railway arrived in 1862, land societies carved the fields into building plots, and between the 1860s and 1911 the streets filled with villas, semis and terraces. That’s still the town you see from the 1900 Clock Tower, one of the highest concentrations of Victorian and Edwardian housing on our patch.

Terraced roofs of that era were typically covered in Welsh slate, drained by valley gutters between the pitches, and finished with party-wall parapets, and each of those details has a known way of growing old. Slate fixings corrode until sound slates start sliding (the trade calls it nail sickness); valley gutters fill with debris or their linings tire; parapet junctions open at exactly the point two houses meet.

Working terraces also takes a bit of streetcraft: access from the front, neighbours either side of every parapet and shared valley, and repairs that have to respect what the two roofs share. It’s a different rhythm from detached suburbia, and it’s week-in, week-out work for us.

What that means for the work

  • Era-typical slate: single slipped slates re-fixed honestly; wholesale “nail sickness” diagnosed with evidence, not a doorstep verdict
  • Valley gutters between pitches: cleared, checked and re-lined before they leak into two houses at once
  • Party-wall parapets: the junction where terraces actually leak, flashings and copings checked first
  • Victorian stacks: tall, weathered chimneys are routine repointing and leadwork territory

Questions

Thornton Heath questions

Can you match our slate roof?

Usually, with reclaimed Welsh slate where it can be sourced, or honest man-made alternatives where it can’t. We tell you which is which, what each costs, and how it’ll sit next to the originals, before you decide.

Our valley gutter leaks into next door. Whose job is it?

Shared valleys and parapets sit on the boundary, so the fix usually concerns both houses, and the neighbourly route is agreeing it before work starts. We’ll put what we find and the options in writing, which makes that conversation much easier.

Do you cover Norbury and South Norwood too?

Yes: the northern side of our patch takes in Norbury, South Norwood and Selhurst alongside Thornton Heath, and carries on into Mitcham. The postcode checker answers for your exact street.
