What Selsdon roofs are actually like
Selsdon is an interwar creation almost end to end: when the last lord of the manor died in 1925 the farmland was sold, and from 1926 Selsdon Garden Village was built out through the late 1930s until the war stopped it. That gives the suburb an unusually consistent stock, and a consistent set of roofing birthdays, with fixings and first-generation felt all reaching old age together.
The exception makes the place interesting: Selsdon is noted for its Art Deco houses, with several groups along the Addington Road, and Art Deco means genuinely flat roofs and parapet details. Those are a different trade from tile work: EPDM and GRP systems, falls that must actually drain, and edges done properly. We do both sides of that line, which in Selsdon matters.
And it all sits high, around 150 metres up by Selsdon Wood, one of the earliest pieces of London’s Green Belt. Elevation means exposure: wind-driven rain works ridge lines, verges and parapets here harder than it does down the hill in Croydon.
What that means for the work
- Garden-village interwar stock: era-typical nail fatigue, slipping tiles usually mean fixings first, verdicts second
- Art Deco flat roofs: proper EPDM/GRP territory with parapet detailing, not a job for a tile-only outfit
- 150 m elevation: exposed details checked as standard, not just the obvious fault
- No conservation area in Selsdon itself, material choices are yours, and we lay out the honest options

Questions
Selsdon questions
Do you handle the flat-roofed Art Deco houses?
Yes. That’s exactly the work our flat-roof side exists for: EPDM rubber or GRP fibreglass, falls corrected so water actually leaves, and parapet edges detailed properly. A flat roof done right is a quiet roof for a very long time.
Do you cover Forestdale and Addington?
Yes, Selsdon’s neighbours are inside the patch too. Whatever the postcode says, the checker on our areas page gives you the straight answer in two seconds.
Whole streets here seem to be re-roofing. Should we?
Selsdon’s houses mostly share a birthday, so roofs do reach old age together, but “the neighbours did it” isn’t evidence about your roof. A roof check is: felt, battens and fixings tell us honestly whether you need a re-roof now, a repair now, or nothing yet.
