Redhill grew around the railway junction, and its roofs are steeper than the London stock we usually work on. Pitch changes the price, so we measure rather than guess.

What Redhill roofs are actually like
Redhill is a railway town and its housing dates from that. The borough’s design guide describes Victorian and Edwardian residential development in Redhill as associated with the London to Brighton Railway, and captions the town’s stock as Victorian housing developed around the rail junction. That means terraces and villas of the era, with the long slopes, deep valleys and tall stacks that come with them.
The materials are local in a way that is not true of most of our patch. The same design guide records that the clays in the borough “have also provided the characteristic roof tile, tile hanging and brickwork”, and describes traditional buildings in the Greensand belt as using red brick, red tile roofs and distinctive hung tile elevations. Tile hanging is a wall finish that behaves like a roof, and it fails like one, so on a Redhill house the vertical tiling is part of the roofing job rather than somebody else’s problem.
Pitch is the other Redhill difference, and it hits the quote directly. The borough guide is specific about it: roofs “should be pitched at about 50 degrees for plain tiles, or 30 to 50 degrees for slate”, and notes that traditional Surrey roofs have a steep pitch with gable ends. A 50 degree roof holds far more actual roof than its footprint suggests, takes longer to work on, and needs more scaffold. Anyone quoting a Surrey roof off a floor plan is guessing low.
What that means for the work
- Steep Surrey pitches: more roof per house than the footprint suggests, measured not estimated
- Local clay tile and tile hanging, matched properly. Hung tiling is roof work, not decoration
- Victorian terraces and villas: long slopes, deep valleys, tall chimney stacks
- Conservation areas including Redstone Hill and St John’s. We check your street before quoting

Questions
Redhill questions
Why is a Redhill roof more expensive than the same house in London?
Usually pitch. The borough’s own design guidance puts traditional plain-tiled Surrey roofs at around 50 degrees, and a steeper roof is physically bigger than a shallow one covering the same floor area. More tiles, more felt and battens, more labour, and often more scaffold. It is not a surcharge for the postcode, it is more roof, and the quote will show it as measured area rather than a round number.
My walls are covered in tiles. Is that a roofing job?
Yes. Tile hanging is a traditional finish across this borough and it works exactly like a roof turned vertical: battens, fixings, and tiles that slip or crack. When it fails, water gets behind it and into the wall. We repair and re-hang it as part of the same job, matching the existing tile.
Do you cover Merstham and the villages around Redhill?
We cover RH1, and how far around it we go depends on the job. Send the postcode with a photo and we will tell you straight away whether it is one we can serve properly. If it is not, we would rather say so than take it and turn up late forever.
